Softball: Cougars snatch three victories

Scoring 40 runs over three games, the Zumbrota-Mazeppa softball team went a perfect 3-0 in its home invitational on Saturday. The Cougars opened with an 11-2 win over St. Anthony Village, followed by an 18-6 five-inning victory over Simley and an 11-6 win in the final game against New Life Academy.

“Those are good teams we played against (on Saturday),” said Z-M head coach Kevin Nelson. “Two of the teams (New Life Academy and St. Anthony Village) placed at state last year and they got a shot to get back this year.”

Providing some of the biggest fireworks of the day for the Cougars was senior Carley Henning. Over the trio of games, the senior went 9-for-11 with three home runs and 10 RBI. Hailey Dykes also crushed the ball, going 8-for-11 with seven RBI, including a grand slam against St. Anthony Village.

In the pitcher’s circle, Morgan Olson picked up a pair of victories, striking out a total of 15 batters in games against St. Anthony Village and New Life Academy. Against Simley, senior pitcher Amber Gehrke was credited with the victory.

Scheduled to play in three games this week, Z-M will head to Triton on Monday, weather pending.
