Baseball: Z-M, Goodhue split doubleheader

Thanks to late-game heroics by both teams, Zumbrota-Mazeppa and Goodhue split a Hiawatha Valley League Blue division doubleheader Friday in Zumbrota.

Thanks to a base hit to center field by Cody Heitman that scored Freedom Hunt, the Cougars came away with a 4-3 Game 1 win. Then in the nightcap, the Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capped off by a game-winning hit from Taylor Buck that scored Sam Kyllo for a 4-3 Goodhue victory.

In Game 1, Cody Hinrichs got the win for Z-M, striking out four in the complete-game victory. Heitman led the Cougars’ offense with a pair of hits. Alex Thomforde, Logan Breuer and Austin Buck each had a pair of hits for the Wildcats in the loss.

Thomforde took the win with a pair of strikeouts while also helping his cause with two hits for Goodhue in Game 2. Riley Bollum added to the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double. Jacob Ugland was Z-M’s top hitter, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Both teams are slated to play at home on Monday, with Z-M facing Hayfield and Goodhue playing Byron.
