Softball: Z-M edges Stewartville

Facing one of the better teams in Section 1AA, Zumbrota-Mazeppa needed to be sharp Friday night. The Cougars were just that, playing flawless in the field to beat Stewartville, 2-1.

The Tigers scored in the second on a Jena O’Byrne home run, which was one of only two hits for Stewartville. Z-M managed six hits scoring once in the third when Morgan Olson tripled and got knocked in on an Amber Gehrke groundout. The Cougars’ second run came in the sixth on an error after a sacrifice bunt. Tayler Mort and Hailey Dykes were both 2-for-3 with a double with Dykes scoring the winning run after taking third on Jackie Matuska’s  bunt.

“We came back and played a good defensive game,” Z-M head coach Kevin Nelson said. “We only had six hits, but it was against a much better pitcher. We did a pretty good job in all phases of the game.”

Gehrke pitched the first five innings, but Olson got the win. Gehrke allowed two hits and two walks with two striekouts. Olson did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out two in two innings.

Z-M (6-1) hosts a tournament Saturday with St. Anthony Village, Simley and New Life Academy.
