Softball: Hayfield's bats blast Goodhue

Goodhue was able to extend Tuesday’s game with Hayfield after scoring six runs in the fifth inning, but the host Vikings were able to put the Hiawatha Valley League game away in five innings with a 16-6 victory.

Down 15-0 through four innings, a combination of timely hitting and Hayfield errors helped the Wildcats cut the gap to nine runs, keeping the 10-run rule at bay.

“In the fifth, we caught a few breaks. They ended up with four of their (five) errors in that fifth inning,” said Goodhue head coach Chris Irvin. “We had two of our three hits in the fifth inning. It was pretty interesting that we were down 15-0 and scored six and stayed alive.”

Brittney Ryan led the Wildcats offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Laurie Pearson was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Tallying 15 hits as a team, Hayfield’s biggest boost came off the bat of Dani Wagner, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI. She belted a 3-run homer in the second inning, then followed that with a 2-run shot in the fourth. Grace Mindrup added three hits, including a double, three RBI and three runs for the Vikings.

Goodhue (2-5, 1-4 HVL) heads to La Crescent on Friday.
