Softball: Errors haunt Z-M in loss to Hayfield

A three-run lead evaporated quickly for Zumbrota-Mazeppa Tuesday night as Hayfield took advantage of three sixth-inning errors by the Cougars to come out on top, 8-4.

Z-M scored once each in the second and third, then twice in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. But a two-base error on a single was followed by a run-scoring error that cut the Cougar lead to one.

Z-M got an out after that, but an error and a single set up a three-run home run, and a solo shot followed, as the Vikings took full advantage of Z-M’s sloppy defense.

“We didn’t play very well defensively. We didn’t hit their pitcher. We didn’t run the bases well. We didn’t back people up, and when you give up six outs in an inning, you better have a good offense,” said Cougars head coach Kevin Nelson. “And we didn’t have that.”

Morgan Olson finished 2-for-4 with a run scored with Tayler Mort (2-for-4) and Alyssa Quam (2-for-2) also connecting for a pair of hits apiece. Kate Heitland ended up 1-for-1.

The Cougars (6-1) will host four more games this week beginning with Thursday’s affair against Stewartville. Z-M will host a round-robin tournament Saturday with New Life Academy, St. Anthony Village and Simley making the trip.
