Baseball: Top-ranked KoMets hold off Bombers

Garrett Beach’s RBI single in the first inning got Cannon Falls off to a good start against top-ranked Kasson-Mantorville. But the KoMets’ bats came alive in the third, scoring four runs and holding off the Bombers the rest of the way for the 7-3 win in a non-divisional Hiawatha Valley League contest.

“We made a few defensive mistakes today that you cannot afford to make against a great team like K-M,” said Cannon Falls head coach Bucky Lindow. “We had many good at-bats, but some ended up being line-drive outs. The ball was flying around John Burch Park with regularity... Our energy was good, our pitchers battled, (but) K-M just outplayed us today.”

Beach would get a second RBI in a third inning that saw three Cannon Falls doubles. Bryce Boyle-Hoban and Brock Peterson snagged extra bases along with Beach, with Peterson also knocking in a run. But that would be all the Bombers could muster on the scoreboard.

The Komets added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, with two of those three runs coming on errors.

The Bombers (5-2 overall, 3-0 HVL Blue) will travel to Rochester Lourdes Thursday with Pine Island coming north for a Saturday doubleheader.
