Baseball: Cougars win in extras

Despite committing nine errors, Zumbrota-Mazeppa baseball mounted a 9-8 come-from-behind victory in eight innings against Triton Thursday in Zumbrota.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Cody Heitman hit into a fielder’s choice. With the throw going home, the Cougars’ Brady Schoenfelder beat the throw to score the game-winning run.

The win came as a relief to Z-M after seeing a 7-2 lead after two innings evaporate thanks to the fielding gaffes.

“We had a lot of chances and we couldn’t get a big hit. Then in the seventh inning, we hit a line drive to the first baseman and get doubled off,” said Cougars’ head coach Chuck Ohm. “After being down (in the seventh inning), we were finally able to come through.”

Cody Hinrichs got the win after throwing three innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one unearned run. At the plate, Mark Yeakel was 4-for-5 with two RBI, Chase Steffen was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI, and Jacob Ugland and Schoenfelder each had three hits and an RBI apiece.

Z-M (1-2) head to Stewartville on Tuesday.
