Baseball: Lake City wins wild one at home

The scoreboard in Lake City got a workout Tuesday afternoon with two teams of Tigers combining for 24 runs. The home team came out on top, beating Stewartville 13-11, in a matchup of two Hiawatha Valley League teams.

Lake City jumped ahead 7-0 in the second inning before Stewartville got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth. Lake City got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning before the wheels fell off and Stewartville tied the game with a nine-run sixth.

“The next thing you know, it’s 11-11, then we scored two in the bottom of the sixth,” said Lake City head coach Perry Iberg. “It was just a mix of some errors, some poor pitching and some hits.”

Elliot Cox put Lake City up for good with a two-RBI double in the sixth, earning John Brown the victory on the mound. Cox finished 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, while Brown added three hits and an RBI to his pitching win.

Reid Lundell (2-for-5, RBI), Jarett Thomas (2-for-2), Luke Hartzell (2-for-4) and Andrew Schmidt (2-for 2 RBI) also had solid games with the bats.

Trevor Gnotke got the start for the Tigers, going four innings before giving way to the bullpen. Brown worked two innings giving up two hits while striking out three.

Lake City (3-2 overall) will host Cannon Falls Thursday.
