Baseball: Cannon Falls beats Byron

A three-run second inning was all Cannon Falls needed in a 6-1 Hiawatha Valley League victory over Byron Monday evening.

Garrett Beach opened the second with a double, followed by a walk, two singles and a sacrifice fly. Beach finished the game 1-for-2, while Jonathon Sharot, who walked in the second, ended up 1-for-1 with 2 RBI and a triple. Peter Haggerty also had 2 RBI while going 1-for-2. The Bombers also got a run in the fourth, and two in the sixth, before allowing the Bears a single tally in the seventh.

Derek Johnson got the win on the bump with Michael Monson also getting some time on the hill.

“Johnson has thrown in relief twice this year, but this was his first start, and Monson got his first varsity mound time,” said Cannon Falls head coach Bucky Lindow. “They did a great job and we played fine defense behind them. We played five games in the past seven days, and the boys showed strong mental toughness.”

The Bombers (4-1 overall, 2-0 HVL) will head to Lake City Thursday before hosting Kasson-Mantorville next Tuesday.
