Girls Basketball: Wildcats beat Cougars in finale

While Thursday’s blizzard kept most teams off the court Friday, Hiawatha Valley League opponents and Highway 58 rivals Goodhue and Zumbrota-Mazeppa faced off Friday, with the host Wildcats winning the regular-season finale 59-48.

Goodhue’s three seniors – Mikayla Miller, Kali Ryan and Meredith Watson – were the team’s leaders on Friday. Miller had 25 points and eight rebounds and Ryan added 10 points. Watson had an unconventional double-double with 10 points and 10 steals.

“She’s a player who’s like, ‘What do you need? I’ll do it.’ She fills any need that we have,” Wildcats head coach Josh Wieme said.

For the Cougars, Hailey Dykes had 13 points and Carley Henning finished with 12.

Third-ranked (1A) Goodhue finishes at 21-5 and 14-4 in the HVL while Z-M ends the regular season at 11-12 and 8-10 in conference play. Section seedings will be announced this weekend.
