Girls Basketball: Feisty Z-M can't knock off K-W

Second-ranked (2A) Kenyon-Wanamingo ended Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s five-game win streak, but the Cougars showed some fight in a 51-45 Hiawatha Valley League loss Tuesday in Kenyon.

“We started out really well. I think we had a 10-point lead midway through the (first) half. Then we started turning it over and they got within two (at halftime),” said Z-M head coach Scott Paukert. “The second half, they took the lead fairly early.”

Leading the Knights’ comeback was Siri Sviggum, who Paukert said hit three 3-pointers in a manner of two minutes. She went on to score 14 of her 17 points in the second half.

Down eight with three minutes left, the Cougars cut K-W’s lead to three with 56 seconds remaining. But the Knights stayed resilient, hitting their free throws down the stretch to keep Z-M away from the upset.

Kalli Paukert and Alyssa Quam led the Cougars with 10 points apiece. Carley Henning and Hailey Dykes each came up with nine points in the loss.

Z-M (11-11, 8-9 HVL) closes the regular season on the road Friday at Goodhue.
