Girls Basketball: Cougars continue to roll

Zumbrota-Mazeppa tallied its fifth win in a row and its eighth victory in the past nine games after holding off Pine Island for a 30-24 Hiawatha Valley League win Friday in Zumbrota.

“They did tie it at 16 early in the second, but we went ahead and for the rest of the half, we had a four-to-six point lead the rest of the way,” said Cougars’ head coach Scott Paukert. “It was a nice win for us.”

Hailey Dykes’ near double-double of nine points and eight rebounds led Z-M. Kalli Paukert added eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Nikki Fokken came up with 11 points, and Sam Heeren added 10 for the Panthers in the losing effort.

Both teams fell flat on offense, with Z-M shooting 21 percent from the floor (8-for-38) and Pine Island hitting 22 percent of its attempts (6-for-27).

With two games left in the season, the Cougars (11-10, 8-8 HVL) face the cream of the crop in the HVL Blue, with Kenyon-Wanamingo on Tuesday and Goodhue on Feb. 21.
