Girls Basketball: Fast start vaults Z-M to win over Cannon Falls

Jumping out to a 20-3 lead just six minutes into the game, Zumbrota-Mazeppa met little resistance on the way to a 63-29 Hiawatha Valley League victory over Cannon Falls Tuesday in Zumbrota.

“Our intensity – on offense and defense – was very good to start off tonight,” said Cougars’ head coach Scott Paukert. “It was very good to see.”

After starting the season 3-9, Z-M has won seven of their last eight to move to 10-10 overall and 7-8 in the HVL.

Kalli Paukert put up one of the best games of her career with 21 points, seven assists, five steals, three rebounds and three 3-pointers. Hailey Dykes tallied 12 points, Carley Henning had 11 points, and Molly Lawler finished with four assists and three steals in the victory. As a team, the Cougars shot 50 percent from the field (26 of 52).

The Bombers (4-18, 1-14 HVL) were led by Courtney Woodcock’s seven points and five rebounds. Maggie Rutter had a team-high eight points.

Z-M stays at home Friday against Pine Island while Cannon Falls hosts Kenyon-Wanamingo on Friday.
