Girls Basketball: Z-M fends off Lake City

Carley Henning got Zumbrota-Mazeppa off to a roaring start, hitting her first five shots, including two 3-pointers, to help the Cougars hold off Lake City, 54-52, Monday night.

Madi Green had a similar run in the second half, scoring 15 of her 17 points for the Tigers in the final 18 minutes. Breanna Gates had 16 points and seven rebounds for Lake City while Bailey Cronin added five steals.

Henning ended up with 19 points and seven rebounds, but scored just five points after halftime. Hailey Dykes chipped in with 10 points for Z-M as Alyssa Quam added eight. Kalli Paukert dished out a team-high seven assists.

The Cougars led 30-22 at the half, but the Tigers stormed back.

“Lake City came out aggressive defensively to start the second half, and we didn’t respond very well to it,” said Z-M head coach Scott Paukert.

The Tigers led by five points with eight minutes left, 47-42, but the Cougars were able to come back to take the lead with a minute left when Henning scored to make it 52-51 Z-M. The Tigers missed their last four shots.

Tayler Mort hit a free throw with four seconds left, leaving Lake City with a half-court attempt that did not fall.

“As bad as things were going for us, I kind of feel like we stole one a little bit because we had a stretch that was not good. But we battled back and hit some free throws at the end,” Scott Paukert said.

Z-M (7-10 overall, 5-8 HVL) will face Bethlehem Academy at home Thursday, and then visit Triton Friday. Lake City (8-9, 4-8) has two road games coming up, including Friday’s trip to Kenyon-Wanamingo and a visit to Lewiston-Altura on Feb. 10.
