Wrestling: Bombers done in by bonus points

A back-and-forth, seven-to-seven Hiawatha Valley League dual meet went the way of Stewartville Thursday night as the Tigers were able to hold Cannon Falls at bay thanks to four pins and the bonus points provided.

Paul Fitterer (113 pounds) earned an 18-3 technical fall over Tyler Laures to get the Bombers on the board after Stewartville began the dual with a fall. Ryan Epps (120) gave Cannon Falls the lead with a pin of his own over Ryan Clark.

The Tigers responded with an 18-3 run over the next five matches, totaling two falls and two decisions all sandwiched around Connor Rohr’s 138-pound, 4-1 victory over Brady Keefe.

The Bombers were able to come up with four more wins, but none were worth more than three points to the team total while Stewartville’s final two wins netted the Tigers nine points.

Sterling Carlson (160), Derek Johnson (182), Nathan Melhouse (195) and Clay Broze (285) all came away with deicisions.

Cannon Falls (12-6 overall, 4-4 HVL) will compete in the Rochester Century tournament Saturday before returning to conference action Tuesday, along with La Crescent, with a triangular at Kasson-Mantorville.
