Girls Basketball: Dover-Eyota rolls over Z-M

The Zumbrota-Mazeppa girls basketball team had not played since Dec. 20, a span of 20 days leading into Thursday’s non-conference affair with Dover-Eyota.

The Eagles, ranked sixth in Class 2A, had not lost a game this season, a streak that continued against the Cougars with a 64-45 victory.

"We did some positive things,” said Z-M head coach Scott Paukert. “They came in averaging 76 points per game, so I thought we played well defensively. And we did a good job of handling their press, but they did hurt us a little on transition. They got some easy baskets on us that way.”

Brandi Blattner led Dover-Eyota with 21 points as the Eagles were able to pull away from Z-M down the stretch. Down 34-21 at the half, the Cougars were able to get within eight with about nine minutes remaining in the game. But Blattner and her teammates ran out to their biggest lead of the game to close out win No. 11.

Alyssa Quam led the Cougars with nine points while Tayler Mort and Kalli Paulert each pitched in seven. Carley Henning scored eight points and pulled in a team-high nine rebounds. Molly Lawler added six assists and three steals as Emma Drackley chipped in six points off the bench.

Including Thursday’s game, Z-M (3-5) will embark on a 10-games-in-22-days journey beginning with Friday’s home game against Kasson-Mantorville (10-3).
