Wrestling: Z-M pins its way to Buffalo title
After receiving a bye in the first round, Zumbrota-Mazeppa nearly swept Rogers then closed out Sartell-St. Stephen to win the Buffalo Bison Duals Saturday in Buffalo.
The Cougars cruised to a 60-6 victory over the Royals, which included six wins by fall. Maverick Johnson (120 pounds), Joey Majerus (126), Jacob Bennett (132), Noah Prodzinski (170), Hunter Prodzinski (182) and Shane Bode (285) all pinned their opponents. The only weights Rogers won were at 195 and 220, both 5-0 decisions.
Z-M’s second dual of the day was more competitive at the lower weights, but the Cougars handled the Sabres from 132 through heavyweight, dropping just two of the 10 matches over that span.
Majerus got Z-M’s first victory against Sartell with his second fall of the day. Connor Dois (132), Freedom Hunter (138) and Cody Hillerman (145) all won by decision to turn a 15-6 deficit into a 15-15 tie.
The Sabres won at 152, but Dillon Downes responded with a pin at 160 to give the Cougars a brief lead. Sartell’s final win came at 170 before Hunter Prodzinski, Seth Tupper (195) and Evan Block (220) recorded three-straight falls. Bode closed the match with an 8-2 decision.
On Thursday, Z-M will travel to Byron for a Hiawatha Valley League dual against the Bears before loading the bus for a Friday trip to Olivia to compete in the BOLD tournament.
