LA CROSSE - Strong showings in both the third and quarterfinal rounds pushed the No. 2 ranked Ellsworth High School wrestling team to first place after the first day of the Bi-State Classic at the LaCrosse Center Friday.

The Panthers have amassed 180 points and their nearest competitor is Luxemburg-Casco, in second with 170 points, both in Division 2 and in the tournament as a whole.

EHS has four wrestlers who will be wrestling in the semifinals this morning: Jens Lantz at 126 pounds, Brad Cain at 138, Gabe Frandsen at 160 and Logan Kemmerer at 170. 

In last  night's quarterfinals, Lantz pinned L-C's Eric Peters in 2:33; Cain pinned Lancaster's Dustin Reynolds in 3:22; Frandsen pinned New Richmond's Caleb Neumann in 3:58 and Kemmerer pinned Dodgeville's Brady Wetter in 5:43.

Ellsworth recorded 11 pins alone in the final two rounds Friday.

EHS still has six more wrestlers competing in the wrestlebacks today as well. These are Sawyer Strom at 106 pounds, Gabe Mancino at 113, Anders Lantz at 120, Tristan Mueller at 145, Josh Hines at 152 and Brock Steldt at 195. 

Wrestling will begin at 9:30 a.m. and run all day.
