Boys Basketball: Bombers miss target against Maranatha Christian

A tough start to the season continued Tuesday for Cannon Falls in a 71-67 loss to sixth-ranked (Class 1A) Maranatha Christian.

Brock Peterson led the Bombers with 20 points, hauling in six rebounds as well. Austin Noble led the charge on the glass, pulling down seven boards while chipping in eight points. Alex Bultena scored 17 points, grabbed four rebounds and swiped three steals while Hunter Johnson dished out five assists.

Cannon Falls, which was down 12-2 early, fought back for a 37-36 halftime lead. But the Bombers could not stop Maranatha’s Jeremiah Hanson, who went off for 28 points.

“He’s a 6-foot-4 swing guy that plays inside and out and shoots really well,” said Cannon Falls head coach Josh Davisson. “They’re all really athletic.”

The lead changed hands several times in the second half, and culminated with the Bombers hoding possession with the game knotted 67-67.

“Once we got back, it was back and forth,” Davisson said. “We had the ball, tied, with a minute to go, and we just didn’t execute very well. That’s something I need to work on with them. That’s on me.”

Cannon Falls will continue its run against ranked teams later this week when it hosts No. 6 (Class 2A) Rochester Lourdes Friday, then welcomes No. 4 (Class 2A) Minnehaha Academy Saturday.
