Girls Basketball: Strong second half puts Goodhue in the win column

Leading by just one at halftime, Goodhue kicked it into gear in the second half Tuesday to put away Byron 62-40 for the Hiawatha Valley League win in Byron.

“In the first half, we had a hard time against their 1-2-1 zone,” said Wildcats head coach Josh Wieme. “Then in the second half, we moved the ball a lot better.”

Mikayla Miller led the Goodhue charge with 29 points and seven steals, while Shelby Hinsch chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds. Meredith Watson had eight points and seven boards, and Kali Ryan ended the game with six points and seven assists.

Goodhue’s 3-point shooting finally started to click in the second half as the Wildcats sank all four of its 3-pointers after halftime.

Byron got a team-high 18 points from Kailey Webster, and Vanessa Anderson finished with 12 in the loss.

Goodhue (6-0, 2-0 HVL) hosts Hayfield on Friday.
