Wrestling: Ellsworth slams Somerset

Ellsworth opened the 2013-14 wrestling season in dominating fashion Thursday, shellacking Middle Border Conference foe Somerset 69-7 on Thursday. 

The Panthers tallied seven wins by pinfall and also got four victories by forfeit.

Riley Melstrom (132 pounds) got the quickest pin for Ellsworth, putting the Spartans’ Tony Mussehl on his back in 1 minute, 15 seconds. Kenny Stowe (285, 1:16), Brad Cain (138, 1:35) and John Albarado (113, 1:53) also won by first-period pinfall for the Panthers.

Sawyer Strom (106), Tristen Mueller (145) and Gable Frandson (160) all won via pin in the second period, and Josh Hines (152) clinched a close 8-5 decision against Somerset’s Logan Peterson.

The Panthers have a home invitational slated for a 10 a.m. start today. Teams coming to Ellsworth include: Lake City, Boyceville, Cadott, Prescott, River Falls, St. Croix Falls, Sparta, Spring Valley and Unity.
