Girls Basketball: Fast-paced Hayfield takes out Z-M

Coming off a 20-win season, Hayfield poses problems for any team on its schedule. The first of those contests was against Zumbrota-Mazeppa, and try as the Cougars might, they could not solve the fast pace that the Vikings brought to the table Tuesday evening.

“They’re extremely fast, athletic and very quick,” said Z-M head coach Scott Paukert. “We played well, we just ran out of gas. They’re always trapping and pushing the ball. They just wore us down.”

Behind Dani Wagner’s 23 points, Hayfield won the game 70-52. Z-M’s Carley Henning scored 15 points and hauled in six rebounds while Tayler Mort kept the Cougars alive in the first half, scoring nine of her 12 points in the opening 18 minutes. Mort added two steals and nine boards in the game.

The Vikings totaled 20 steals, forcing Z-M into 29 turnovers.

Hailey Dykes added nine points for the Cougars as Kalli Paukert pulled down eight rebounds.

Z-M (1-2) will hit the road for one more game this week, visiting Rochester Lourdes at 7:15 p.m. Friday.
