Boys Basketball: Tigers survive in overtime

After La Crescent brought the game to overtime on a 3-pointer by John Gurholt, Lake City finally put away the visiting Lancers on a free throw by Eli Custer with 14.3 seconds remaining to help the Tigers escape with a 53-52 Hiawatha Valley League victory on Tuesday.

After Custer’s make, La Crescent had one more chance to tie the game up, but missed the game-winning jumper. Both teams scrambled for the ball under the hoop as time expired.

Reid Lundell paced the Tigers with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Jesse Oliver chipped in with 17. Custer grabbed 10 rebounds, and John Brown swiped the ball three times in the victory.

Lake City led by as much as nine points with 6:35 left in the game before the Lancers stormed back. After the Tigers missed two free throws with 18 seconds remaining, that set up Gurholt for the game-tying 3-pointer, putting the score at 47-47.

Although La Crescent (3-1) tied the game, they were unable to get the lead at any point in the game. Leading the team on offense was Joe Sandvik and Zack Melbostad, who both finished with 15 points in the loss.

Lake City (2-2) is on the road Thursday at Plainview-Elgin-Millville.
