Boys Basketball: Area teams gear up for season opener

Cannon Falls Bombers

2012-13 Season: 18-11 overall, finished tied for second in the Hiawatha Valley League Blue division at 9-3; lost to St. Peter, 65-46, in the Section 2AA North sub-section final.

First Game: Nov. 22 vs. St. Croix Lutheran.

Key Returners: Jordan Lundell, Sr., All-HVL, first team All-Area; Brock Peterson, Sr., All-HVL, second team All-Area; Austin Noble, Sr.; Alex Bultena, Sr.; Hunter Johnson, Sr.

Key Losses: Noah Callister, Paul Rolfes, Tanner Jackson

From Head Coach Josh Davisson: “(Our seniors) have a lot of varsity experience and are great leaders on and off the court. For us to be successful as a team and program, they need to continue to be great teammates and role models.”

Ellsworth Panthers

2012-13 Season: 5-16 overall, finished eighth in the Middle Border Conference with a 2-11 conference record. Lost to West Salem, 67-61, in the first round of the WIAA regional tournament.

First Game: Nov. 26 at Baldwin-Woodville.

Key Returners: Chrystian Kulow, Sr., first team All-Area; Evan Klawitter, Jr.; Logan Armstrong, Sr.; Nick Taranto, Jr.; Will Huppert, Sr.

Key Losses: Alex Campbell, Brady DeGross, James Georgakas, Tyler Marson, Derrick Swanson.

From Head Coach Corey Enberg: “We need to play team basketball within our system, be diciplined and do the little things correctly.”

Goodhue Wildcats

2012-13 Season: 12-15 overall, 5th in Hiawatha Valley League Blue division at 4-8; lost to Bethlehem Academy 53-47 in the second round of the Section 1A tournament.

First Game: Nov. 22 vs. Rochester Lourdes.

Key Returners: Riley Bollum, Sr. All-HVL; Tyler Schumacher, Jr.

Key Losses: Tyson Dicke, second team All-Area; Zach Hinsch.

From Head Coach Matt Halverson: “We have a lot of juniors and sophomores with some talent, but very little varsity experience overall. We are going to depend on a mixture of these underclassmen with seniors to put together a good team.”

Lake City Tigers

2012-13 Season: 21-5 overall, first in Hiawatha Valley League Blue division with 11-1 record, fell in HVL Championship game to Byron. Lost in the second round of the Section 1AA tournament, 56-54, to Rochester Lourdes.

First Game: Nov. 22 vs. Hayfield.

Key Returners: Reid Lundell, Sr.; Brady Kuchinka, So..

Key Losses: Ben Schramski, All-Area Player of the Year; Coleman Sweeney; Jake Griebenow, second team All-Area; Mitch Kuchinka; Josh Atkinson.

From Head Coach Greg Berge: “I love our players’ attitudes and work ethic and look forward to defining their roles and watching our team develop throughout the season.”

Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars

2012-13 Season: 14-12 overall, tied for second in Hiawatha Valley League Blue division with 9-3 record; lost to Byron, 51-47, in the second round of the Section 1AA playoffs.

First Game: Nov. 26 vs. Byron.

Key Returners: Kurt Gadient, Sr.; Ellis Hirman, Sr.; Jacob Ugland, Sr.; Jacob Tschann, Sr.

Key Losses: Lucas Ziemba, All-HVL, first team All-Area; Kevin Niebuhr, All-HVL, second team All-Area; Nathaniel Rauen, All-HVL.

From Head Coach Fred Liffrig: “We will need great leadership from our four seniors and need to try to find the right kids to play together and find the right chemistry.”
