Volleyball: Bombers beat cagey Byron in four sets
Cannon Falls advanced in four sets over Byron in the Section 1AA-West tournament, but it didn’t come without some drama.
After the Bombers won the first set 25-13, the Bears won a grueling second set, 30-28 to tie the match. Eventually, Cannon Falls would weather the storm to take the final two sets, 25-15, 28-26.
“This was a really improved Byron team,” said Bombers’ head coach Melissa Huseth. “We played them in our first (Hiawatha Valley League) match and they really improved. They had a very scrappy defense.
In the fourth set, Cannon Falls trailed 20-9, but were able to claw back, thanks to some great serving, to win the set and the match. Becca Vandenheuvel was one of the players that served the Bombers back into the match, finishing with three aces to go with a team-high 35 digs.
Katie Noble had a Cannon Falls-best 13 kills to go with two ace blocks, and Hailey Huseth had 12 kills, 32 set assists, two ace serves and an ace block. Carly Broze tallied 11 kills, and Madasyn Hofstedt slammed down nine kills and four blocks in the Bombers’ victory.
For the Bears, Reed Klunder finished with 13 kills and eight digs, and Lexi Barth had nine kills, five ace serves and eight digs.
Cannon Falls faces second-seeded Kasson-Mantorville in the sub-section semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rochester Civic Center. The third-ranked KoMets, who beat Pine Island in three sets on Tuesday, swept the Bombers in their only meeting of the season on Sept. 17.
