Girls Tennis: Bombers duo advances to Section 1A final four

Cannon Falls’ Taylor Banitt and Maddie Adel will appear in the Section 1A girls tennis final four after winning two matches Thursday. Banitt and Adel topped Helen Han and Alice Xuan of Winona Cotter in the first round before the third-seeded Bombers took down sixth-seeded Sydney Allison and Lucy Hanson of Rochester Lourdes.

Banitt and Adel will face second-seeded Olivia McIntosh/Maddy Knoll of Waseca in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Hannah Boman and Kaesey Glaess won their first match but 6-0, 7-6 to to top-seeded Rachel Kamath and Jessica Alexander of Rochester Lourdes.

Singles players Sheyenne Bauer and Sarah Modrak both played in, and won, pigtail matches before falling in their next match.

Bauer defeated Nastya Bornschiegl 6-1, 6-1, then ran into the section’s top seed in Sofia Terzic of Rochester Lourdes. Terzic rolled into the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bauer.

Modrak beat Ann Ottonbat of New Life Academy 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 to earn the chance to upset Waseca’s Maddie Muotka. But the No. 2 seed ended Modrak’s season with a 6-0, 6-0 decision.

Lake City ends tennis season at section tournament

The Lake City girls tennis team saw all hopes for a state tournament appearance fall by the wayside Thursday as the individual Section 1A tournament moves on without a Tiger in the mix.

Katie Henning and Josie Kuchinka both took losses in the first round of singles play, ending their bids for a section title.

Henning fell to fourth-seeded Whitney Erickson of Stewartville 6-1, 6-0 while Kuchinka lost to third seeded Jenny Mulvey of Trinity School at River Ridge 6-0, 6-1.

Erica Hubbard and Lidia Wallerich won their first match 6-0, 6-0 before falling 6-1, 6-1 to top-seeded Rachel Kamath and Jessica Alexander of Rochester Lourdes.

Katie Coyle and Carly Cronin also won their first match, but fell 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Waseca’s Olivia McIntosh and Maddy Knoll.
