Girls Soccer: PIZM edges Lourdes in 1A quarterfinals

Even after Rochester Lourdes scored first, Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa wasn't phased. And five minutes later, the Wildcats put up a goal to tie up Thursday's Section 1A quarterfinal match.

Then in the second half, an unassisted goal by Liza Shelquist put sixth-seeded PIZM past third-ranked Lourdes 2-1 in Rochester.

After the Eagles went up 1-0, the Wildcats' Shelquist took a shot on net that was stopped by Lourdes' goalkeeper, but Keana Rosaaen was there to corral the rebound and put the ball in at the 25th minute.

"She's been playing great alongside Liza and Abby Gushulak," said PIZM head coach Doug Weincouff. "They're all playing very good ball."

Then with the score tied in the second half, Shelquist bumped in the loose ball past Lourdes' keeper for the go-ahead goal.

In net for the Wildcats, Summer Cavallaro came up with five saves for the victory.

In the section semifinals Saturday, PIZM will face second-seeded Kasson-Mantorville. The KoMets advanced with a 2-0 win over Winona on Thursday. Back on Sept. 26, K-M defeated PIZM 1-0 in their lone matchup in the regular season.
