Girls Soccer: Corner kicks help PIZM get past Red Wing

Thanks to a pair of goals from Laura Cragoe off of corner kicks, as well as an unassisted goal from Madison House, sixth-seeded Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa ended 11th-seeded Red Wing’s season with a 3-0 victory in the Section 1A playoffs Tuesday in Pine Island.

“We played into the wind in the first half, then in the second half, the wind was with us,” said Wildcats’ head coach Doug Weincouff. “The girls put the pressure on in the second half. And to Red Wing’s credit, they never quit and their girls played to the last minute.”

Cragoe’s goals came just two minutes apart, with 32 and 30 minutes left in the game. Then with 10 minutes left in the contest, House let one rip, making it a three-goal game.

“It was a great shot that went off the keeper’s fingertips,” Red Wing co-head coach David Thurston said of House’s goal.

PIZM goalie Summer Cavallaro stopped five shots for her sixth shutout victory of the season. The Wildcats (9-6-1) are on the road for the section quarterfinals against No. 3 Rochester Lourdes on Thursday. Ember Griebling collected eight of her 13 saves in the second half.

Red Wing ends the season at 1-13-2.

“We played with a lot of intensity and desire,” Thurston said. “There was a lot of teamwork and communication. I’m very happy with how they played today.”
