LAKE CITY – Playing Stewartville in the third-place game of its home invitational, Lake City maintained play in its offensive end for most of the game. The only thing that was missing was the goals.

And while Stewartville’s chances were limited, they were able to put in the goals when needed. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Stewartville bagged a goal with 2 minutes, 4 seconds left in the extra period to take the third-place match of the Lake City Invitational, 2-1.

“That’s soccer sometimes,” said Lake City head coach Mark Spence. “It happens.”

Off a 4-0 loss to then-winless Red Wing in the first game, things looked much more promising for Lake City early in the third-place game. In the 14th minute, Lake City got a breakaway opportunity, but a Stewartville player took down the offensive player from behind in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Taking the kick was Lake City’s Brandy White, who tucked the ball in for the early 1-0 lead.

“She’s a very, very good player for us, especially on offense,” Spence said of White. “She’s doing a good job for us.”

It took Stewartville until the 31st minute to put a dent in the scoreboard as Cadyn Welch snuck a ball past Lake City goalkeeper Beth Peterson to tie the match up 1-1 before halftime.

Both teams battled it out at midfield for much of the second half with neither Lake City or Stewartville having anything to show for it.

“We knew we wanted to keep the pressure on them, and we thought we could keep the pressure on the defense by having our defenders push the ball up,” Spence said. “We had the opportunities.”

In the overtime period, Lake City looked as though they would go up 2-1 on a shot by White. But the ball ricocheted off the left goal post, knocking Lake City’s chance for a win out with it.

Lake City (3-10) plays host to Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Tuesday, then close out the regular season Thursday at Stewartville.
