Girls Tennis: Cannon Falls shuts out Lake City

The last time Cannon Falls and Lake City met in a girls tennis match, the Bombers claimed a 5-2 win. On Thursday, Cannon Falls did even better, besting the Tigers 7-0 in a Hiawatha Valley League victory.

Maddie Adel and McKenna Bauer both won 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, over Grace Dankers and Katie Johnson, respectively.

Tayler Banitt defeated Josie Kuchinka 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Sheyenne Bauer sailed past Emily Albright 6-1, 6-1.

Grace Rutter and Sarah Modrak whipped Katie Coyle and Carley Cronin 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while the Bombers No. 3 pair of Molly Rolfes and Bethany Nelson easily dispatched of Julie Keller and Chloe McElmury 6-2, 6-2.

The only real trouble for Cannon Falls was at No. 1 doubles where Hannah Bowman and Kaesey Glaess needed three sets to get by Lydia Wallerich and Erica Hubbard 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

“I thought we played pretty well today at every spot. It was a good match for us,” said Cannon Falls head coach Paul Norstad. “In particular, I thought our No. 2 doubles played really well today.”

Cannon Falls will host its own tournament Saturday. The Bombers will start off with Minneapolis Southwest at 9 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. match against New Life Academy of Woodbury. Cannon Falls will close the tournament against Le Sueur-Henderson at 1 p.m. Lake City plays host to Rochester Lourdes on Tuesday in its regular-season finale.
