Volleyball: Cougars over .500 with win over La Crescent

Zumbrota-Mazeppa was in cruise control against La Crescent until the Lancers made a strong push in the third to extend the match. But the Cougars found their form in the fourth set to take Tuesday’s Hiawatha Valley League match, 25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14.

“We got into a funk; maybe we got too comfortable with the lead and let them back in,” said Z-M head coach Stacy Liebenow. “Then we decided that we had to pick up our game again. … There were a couple mental things and some calls that threw off our game, but we fought through it.”

At the net, Carley Henning pounded 18 kills, while Breana Haag added 10 in the win. Molly Lawler finished with 35 digs, and Kalli Paukert had 36 set assists and 21 digs and seven ace serves to lead the Cougars.

Z-M (7-6, 3-3 HVL) hosts Kasson-Mantorville on Thursday.
