Girls Tennis: Cannon Falls eases by Stewartville

With a sweep of the doubles competition, and two solid wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, the Cannon Falls girls tennis team won its second straight match, and third in Hiawatha Valley League competition, with a 5-2 victory over Stewartville Thursday afternoon.

Maddie Adel and Grace Rutter, at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, had tough battles against the Tigers. Adel cruised through her first set before Gabrielle Steinhoff pushed her to a tiebreaker in the second set. Adel weathered the storm, finally dispensing of Steinhoff 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

Rutter’s road bump came in the first set as Madeline Grimm forced a 12th game. Rutter wouldn’t allow that in the second set, however, as she walked to a 7-5, 6-1 win.

Kaesey Glaess and Hannah Bowman defeated Emily Pearson and Mackayla Olsen in a similar way to Adel’s match, winning 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. At the second doubles spot, Sheyenne Bauer and Sarah Modrak took care of Kyra Boland and Rachel Skic 6-2, 6-4. And in the final doubles match, Molly Rolfes and Bethany Nelson wasted little time in dispatching Emma Dwier and Jessica Pedelty 6-1, 6-2.

“We swept the doubles and got two wins out of the singles,” said Cannon Falls head coach Paul Norstad. “Maddie Adel picked up a big win against a pretty good player. It would have been nice to play a full third set at No. 3, but that’s OK, too.”

Mackenzie Olsen beat McKenna Bauer 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8, in that No. 3 singles match. The team match was basically over at that point, so a full third set was not needed. Tayler Banitt at No. 1 singles lost to Whitney Erickson.

The Bombers (6-3) will join fellow HVL school Lake City at the Rochester John Marshall Invitational Saturday. Play begins at 9 a.m.
