Football: Big plays vault Z-M to victory

On its first offensive play, Zumbrota-Mazeppa found pay dirt when quarterback Kurt Gadient found Ellis Hirman for a 67-yard pass for a touchdown. And thanks to three scoring plays of 40-plus yards in the first half, the Cougars came away with a 41-20 Southern Football Alliance White division victory over Kenyon-Wanamingo Friday in Zumbrota.

Later in the game, the big plays continued, and just at the right time for Z-M.

“It was good that we jumped out early and got up big,” said Cougars’ head coach Willie Rauen. “It was a two-score game at the beginning of the fourth quarter, then (running back) Jacob Tschann had a 75-yard run down to the five. Three plays after they made it a two-score game, we put it away.”

With 6 minutes, 30 seconds left in the first quarter, Gadient connected with Jacob Ugland for a 43-yard score. The two put in another touchdown early in the second quarter with a 41-yard pass for a score. With the Cougars up 26-0 in the second, the Knights finally scored when Drew Sathrum ran 67 yards for a touchdown.

Opening the second half, Tschann scored his second touchdown of the night, crossing the goal line from four yards out. K-W tacked on two second-half touchdowns with a 4-yard score from Tanner Warner and a 1-yard run by Sathrum. Gadient capped off his night with a 1-yard scoring run to seal the Z-M victory.

Gadient completed 14 of 26 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns, with Hirman being the main benefactor with seven catches for 108 yards and a score. Tschann ran 16 times for 96 yards in the Cougars’ win.

Sathrum ran for 165 yards on 18 carries for the Knights.

At 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the SFA White, Z-M travels to Dover-Eyota next Friday.
