Boys Soccer: Winona spoils Lake City's opener

Tied at 1-1 late in the second half, a goal by Michael Speltz helped put Winona past Lake City, 2-1, Thursday in Winona.

The Winhawks took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute in the first half when Lucas Schultz scored on a penalty kick.

Twenty-five minutes into the second half, Nick Sievers tied the game up for the Tigers, burying the shot into the net off a pass from Elijah Kroll.

After Speltz’ goal put Winona back in the lead, Lake City put the pressure on in the waning minutes but could not convert another goal.

“We pressed hard in those low couple minutes and kept the pressure on down to the last seconds,” said Tigers’ head coach Paul Oliver. “We just couldn’t get another one in before time ran out.”

At 0-1 overall, Lake City plays its first Hiawatha Valley League game of the season Tuesday in Byron.
