Gymnastics: Owatonna bests Red Wing

One of the top teams in the state came to Red Wing on Friday, and performed like one of the best. Owatonna, who was second in Class AA last year, topped the Wingers, 144.675-127.05.

On the vault, Breck Bergin was the top Red Wing scorer with a fourth-place total of 9.05. Carolyn Hanson took third on the balance beam with an 8.7, and she also posted a sixth-place score of 7.85 on the parallel-uneven bars and a sixth-place score of 8.625 on the floor exercise.

The all-around title went to Owatonna's Lindsay Bangs, who totaled a 36.3. Bergin's 33.75 was fifth, with Hanson right behind with a 33.525.

"I am so impressed with our girls and how they performed in tonight's meet," said Red Wing head coach Lisa Hanson. "For Breck and Carolyn to place in the top four with a team like Owatonna is something to be proud of. Carolyn had a hard fall in the two-minute warm-up just before beam and stayed mentally tough to stick her routine and take third."
