Area Cross-Country: Pine Island boys take second in Stewartville
The Pine Island boys' cross-country came through with a second-place finish Thursday at the Stewartville Invite. The Panthers finished with 108 team points — 42 behind first-place Jordan. Cannon Falls came in 12th with 351 team points.
Pacing the Panthers was Tanner Horton with a fourth-place time of 17 minutes, 58.7 seconds. Following Horton were Danny Langworthy (fifth, 18:09.6), Jacob Wright (25th, 19:19.8), Julian Rauk (31st, 19:36.2) and Lucas Williams (46th, 20:00.2).
Erwin Strelow was the top Bomber runner with a 56th-place time of 20:32.8. Other Cannon Falls scorers included: Jacob Wuff (70th, 21:26.1), Adam Korkowski (72nd, 21:28.9), Carter Zimmerman (84th, 22:26.2) and William Wagner (91st, 23:09.5).
The top Goodhue runner was Beau Jaeger with a 76th-place time of 21:53.5. Goodhue didn't field enough boys' runners for a team score.
Pine Island's girls team found itself in the middle of the pack with an eighth-place finish (192 team points), while Goodhue scored 334. Cannon Falls didn't have enough runners for a team score.
Brooklyn Horton was the top Pine Island runner, finishing in 22:54.7 to take 19th place. Rounding out the Panther scorers were: Alyssa Rauk (38th, 23:54.9), Annika Adelsman (42nd, 24:07.6), Lauren Wangsness (53rd, 25:05.7) and Anastasia Johnston (69th, 26:41.2).
Madisen Betcher was the top Wildcat runner, with a 59th-place time of 25:45.3. Other runners that scored were: Elissa Smith (78th, 27:46.1), Madison Bartholome (83rd, 28:14.6), Alexis Callstrom (86th, 28:57.8) and Becca Alpers (89th, 29:26.5).
Sophie Epps and Kristina Allen finished back-to-back for Cannon Falls in 31st (23:24.2) and 32nd (23:29.3), respectively.
St. Olaf High School Showcase
Up against some of the top teams in the state, the Zumbrota-Mazeppa/Kenyon-Wanamingo cross-country team was aware of the challenge at the St. Olaf High School Showcase in Northfield on Thursday.
With a 19th-place showing (19:23.7), eighth-grader Natasha Sortland proved up to the challenge. She was the top finisher for the girls team which finished 30th with 761 team points.
Other scorers for Z-M/K-W included: Natalye Quam (184th, 22:55.0), Hailey Grudem (238th, 23:37.5), Bobbie Rae Benson (306th, 24:47.6) and Ali Hunstad (350th, 25:39.7).
The boys team tallied 1,168 points to take 35th place. The top runners for Z-M/K-W were: Tyler Ryan (253rd, 19:29.8), Peyton Liffrig (379th, 20:38.7), Preston Ohm (436th, 21:11.4), Blake Lochner (467th, 21:36.7) and Will Grimsrud (519th, 22:09.8).
