Area Girls Basketball Wrap: Pine Island fights off St. Charles for win

With nine lead changes in the second half of Saturday's HVL/TRC Showdown game against St. Charles, Pine Island was able to persevere with a 52-50 victory in Rochester.

Setting the tone for the Panthers was Autumn Pin, who finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Behind her, Emilie Rucker added 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Brooke Sinning had nine points, followed by a seven-point, five-rebound effort from Alex Larson.

"Coming into the game I was a little concerned about the short turnaround time from Friday night's game (a 68-52 win over Byron)," said Pine Island head coach Scott Miller. "But this team continues to impress me with their effort. ... Our team overcame some fatigue and adversity to finish out another game with poise and outstanding effort."

The Panthers (3-3) return home Tuesday against Kasson-Mantorville.

Goodhue 50, Caledonia 41

Down 25-22 at halftime, Goodhue turned it around in the second half, beating Caledonia 50-41 in the HVL/TRC Showdown Saturday in Rochester.

Sisters Sydney and Lexie Lodermeier both had a game-high 15 points, with Sydney grabbing eight rebounds and hitting a pair of 3-pointers and Lexie hauling in five boards. Emily Benrud added eight points and eight boards for the Wildcats.

The Warriors got a team-high 11 points from Katie Tornstrom. No other Caledonia player finished in double digits.

Goodhue (6-1) returns home Tuesday to play Dover-Eyota.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa 73, Chatfield 37

Sprinting out to a 37-23 halftime lead, Zumbrota-Mazeppa used its outside shooting to best Chatfield for a 73-37 win in the HVL/TRC Showdown against Chatfield Saturday in Rochester.

The Cougars' Lyndsey Quam hit five of the team's 12 3-pointers for a game-high 24 points. Twenty-two of those points came in the first half.

Hannah Mensink hit three outside shots for 13 points, followed by 13 for Ashli Christopherson and 10 for Lauren Miller.

Along with the 3-point advantage, Z-M also hit eight more free throws than the Gophers, going 11 of 16 from the line.

The Cougars (5-3) travel to Cannon Falls on Tuesday.

Lake City 67, Southland 34

Playing Southland in the HVL/TRC Showcase Saturday, Lake City picked up its fourth straight win with a 67-34 victory in Rochester.

The Tigers (5-2) head to Rochester Lourdes on Tuesday.

Cannon Falls 33, Fillmore Central 23

After dropping three of its last four games, Cannon Falls got back into the win column on Saturday with a 33-23 win over Fillmore Central in the HVL/TRC Showdown Saturday in Rochester.

On Tuesday, the Bombers (3-4) play host to Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
