Area Baseball: Randolph advances on walk-off single
Randolph and PACT Charter School were engulfed in a pitcher’s duel through the entirety of the game, but the Rockets found a way to scratch across a run to win, 1-0, on Wednesday in the Section 4A quarterfinals.
The Rockets scored the winning run not only in dramatic fashion, but very tactfully as well. Isaac Stoesz started the bottom of the seventh inning by reaching on an error. After an Alec Otte sac bunt, Stoesz moved into scoring position at second base.
Brandon Gerster grounded out in the next at bat, but Stoesz advanced to third. With two outs, Andrew Wenstrom ripped a first-pitch single to right field to score Stoesz and secure the victory.
Neither team was able to get more than four hits on the day, with Wenstrom, Matt Weber, Dane Ehleringer and Nick Drinken logging hits for Randolph.
Drinken was the winning pitcher. He struck out five, walked one and gave up four hits through seven innings.
Next up for Randolph will be a trip to Heritage Christian Academy on Saturday for the Section 4A semifinals.
Goodhue 2, Lester Prairie 0
Goodhue scored two runs in the first inning and that was all it needed as it shut out Lester Prairie, 2-0, in the first round of the Section 4A elimination bracket on Tuesday.
Conor O'Reilly got things started in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out single before Jack Gadient hit a two-run home run on the third pitch to give the Wildcats a permanent lead. Neither team would get more than one runner on base at any point during the remainder of the game.
Gadient went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, two RBI and one run.
Casey Ryan earned the win after getting the start. He struck out 13, walked three and gave up three hits over 6 ⅓ innings. Gadient came on in relief to pitch the final ⅔ innings. He struck out one to log the save.
With the win, Goodhue keeps its season alive and will face either Randolph or PACT Charter School on Thursday at a location to be determined.
