Amateur Baseball: Bears out, Mudhens ready for state

Errors spelled the end of the season for Cannon Falls on Saturday. The Bears committed two blunders, which led to two unearned runs for Minnesota Lake in a 3-2 Royals win. The loss eliminated Cannon Falls from the Region 4C tournament.

Keith Meyers threw all eight innings for the Bears, giving up four hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts and the loss.

Alex Tauer was the only Bear to have two hits, with Braxton Lindow, Rich Burr and Brock Peterson each coming up with one hit.

Thomas Nowack got the win for Minnesota Lake, throwing a complete-game five-hitter with one earned run allowed. Nowack walked four and struck out three. Jeff Cole had two RBI for the Royals.

Miesville begins state tourney on Sunday

The Miesville Mudhens, champions of the Region 1B tournament, will open the Class B state tournament at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Litchfield against Monticello.

Miesville was ranked second in the latest (Aug. 2) poll, with fellow Region 1B state qualifier Dundas coming in sixth. Moorhead, Class B's top-ranked team, is on the opposite side of the bracket from the Mudhens.

First-round play in the tournament is single elimination, with round two beginning on Friday, Aug. 26. The championship quarterfinals are Aug. 27, while elimination round play begins Friday, Sept. 2. The semifinals take place Saturday, Sept. 3, and the championship game on Monday, Sept. 5.
