Amateur Baseball: Buck helps Aces win in extras

Ty Buck’s RBI single in the 11th inning propelled Red Wing to a 5-4, Classic Cannon Valley League victory over Northfield on Sunday afternoon.

Jimmy Bohmbach walked to open the 11th before being replaced by pinch runner Mitch Matter. After Dixon Irwin walked, Matter scored from second base on Buck’s single to left field.

Bohmbach and Buck led the Aces’ offense as each provided three hits. Buck and Mike Hommes each had two RBI, while Dave Jenson and Alex Quiding both singled twice.

Buck doubled down on his game-winning ways, pitching 2 2/3 innings to finish off the Knights. Buck allowed one hit and two walks, but struck out three. Aaron Johnson started for Red Wing, throwing seven innings of six-hit ball. Johnson allowed two runs, both earned, with two walks and 13 strikeouts. Jordan Warren and Brady Schroeder both allowed an earned run between Johnson and Buck.

Two games remain for the Aces, and both are home dates. Prescott will visit the Red Wing Athletic Field on Tuesday, with the Knights closing out the regular season on Thursday. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. starts.

Thursday’s Red Wing/Northfield game will also determine the 4/5 seeds in the Section 1B tournament for both teams, with the winner getting the home-field advantage in the three-game series. Elko and Dundas got the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, and will get first-round byes. In the other first-round section playoff series, third-seeded Miesville will take on sixth-seeded Hastings.
