Amateur Baseball: Aces clinch a pair of victories

Mike Stegora’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference in Red Wing’s 4-3 Classic Cannon Valley League victory over Cannon Falls.

Earlier in Friday’s game, Stegora got the Aces on the board with a two-RBI double to right-center field. Stegora’s homer in the seventh was to the same part of the field as his two-bagger in the second, and in a similar spot as Zach Laffey’s solo blast in the fourth.

After Stegora put Red Wing up 4-1, Cannon Falls answered in the eighth with two runs. Rich Burr reached on a fielder’s choice, and later scored on a wild pitch. Brandon Voth, who had doubled and put Burr on third, scored on Taylor Pagel’s sacrifice fly.

JT Cunningham picked up the win for the Aces, pitching seven innings with nine strikeouts and one earned run allowed. Aaron Stoneberg picked up the two-inning save, allowing two runs (none earned) with two strikeouts.

Noah Callister took the loss, giving up three earned runs across six innings of work. Callister struck out five and walked one.

On Sunday, the Aces secured another CCVL victory by defeating Randolph 12-2 in eight innings. Results were unavailable at press time.

On Tuesday, Red Wing traveled to Elko for a Section 1B contest. On Friday, the Aces return home to play the Bay City Bombers as part of fan appreciation night at the Red Wing Athletic Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
