Amateur Baseball Roundup: Cannon Falls sneaks by Lake City


Cannon Falls 4, Lake City 3

Both Lake City and Cannon Falls jumped out early, with the visiting Serpents leading 3-2 after the first inning. But the Bears were able to tack on two more runs to come away with a 4-3 Classic Cannon Valley League victory Sunday at John Burch Park.

Nate Otto led Cannon Falls on offense, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Cory Hedeen drove in two runs, and was the winning pitcher after striking out four in a complete-game effort.

Derek Sogla accounted for all of the Serpents’ runs with a three-run home run in the opening frame. Zachary Wolfe went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored.

Elko 6, Miesville 3

On the road Sunday for a Section 1B matchup, Miesville fell short against Elko in a 6-3 loss.

Zumbrota 2-0 against Tri County

The Zumbrota Tigers picked up a pair of wins Saturday over the Tri County Tremors in Lewiston, with a 3-0 win in Game 1, followed by a 16-15 Game 2 victory.

In the opener, Zumbrota starting pitcher Noah Grove held Tri County to one hit while striking out two with four walks in a seven-inning game. On offense, AJ Yusten and Eric Swiggum each went 3-for-4, with Yusten clobbering three doubles. Sean Wingfield and Kevin Neibuhr also hit four doubles in the Tigers’ victory.

In the night cap, Zumbrota won despite giving up seven runs in the final inning. Swiggum led the Tigers’ offense by going 4-for-5 with a home run, three doubles, six RBI and a run scored. Yusten was 4-for-4 with a double and four runs while picking up the save in 2/3 innings. Zach Vanostrand, Wingfield, Josh Shirley and Jacob Ugland each collected two hits in the win.


Miesville 12, Lake City 8

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, Miesville regrouped to take a 12-8 Classic Cannon Valley League win against Lake City on Friday at Jack Ruhr Field.

The top three spots in the Mudhens’ lineup provided a big spark, led by leadoff batter Matt Van Der Bosch, who was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Anthony Winters was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, and Charles Bruchu went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs.

Lake City statistics were not available.

Northfield 5, Cannon Falls 4

Three runs in the eighth inning helped Northfield escape Cannon Falls on Friday with a 5-4 Classic Cannon Valley League victory at John Burch Park.

Dave Picha and Eric Pittman each hit home run for the visiting Knights, with Pittman, Jake Mathison, Scott Paulson and Joey Voss each collecting two hits in the win.

Taylor Pagel finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Bears, while Zeke Williams was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored from the leadoff spot.
