Amateur Baseball: Aces clipped by Dundas

It took eight innings for Dundas to finally get rolling on offense. But once the Dukes’ bats started making contact, they were finally able to take command of Friday’s Classic Cannon Valley League game against Red Wing.

After tying the game in the top of the ninth inning, Dundas got the go-ahead run when Todd Mathison’s double scored Pat Wadzinski in the 10th inning for a 3-2 CCVL victory at the Red Wing Athletic Field.

Down 2-0 heading into the eighth inning, the Dukes finally got on the scoreboard thanks to an RBI line-drive single by Wadzinski.

Then with Red Wing’s JT Cunningham going for the save in the ninth, Jon Bishop led the top of the ninth off for Dundas with a double, forcing the Aces to make another move to the bullpen. Jordan Warren came into the game for Red Wing, but the Dukes’ bats came up big again, with Tyler Jones hitting a bloop single that scored Bishop for the game-tying run.

The extra-inning loss came despite a solid outing by Red Wing starting pitcher Aaron Johnson, who struck out five while allowing four hits, four walks and a run in 7 2/3 innings.

Red Wing scored its first run in the fourth, thanks to a bloop single by Zach Laffey that scored Adam Thygesen. Then in the sixth, Mike Hommes led the inning off with a bunt single, eventually scoring on a hit by Steve Boldt.

The Aces stay at home for another CCVL matchup on Sunday, hosting Northfield.
