Amateur Baseball: Red Wing falls in extras

For the second straight game, Red Wing found itself going into extra innings. And unfortunately, for the second straight game, the Aces found themselves on the losing end in a 1-0 10-inning Classic Cannon Valley League loss at Hampton.

With the game scoreless in the top of the ninth inning, Red Wing got a leadoff single from Adam Thygesen, who worked his way to third base. With two outs, Dave Jenson got a base hit to left field, but Thygesen got thrown out at the plate for the final out, ending the Aces’ best chance at a lead.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Cardinals’ Rhett Hebig led the inning off with a single, and then came around for the game’s lone run on a walk-off base hit by designated hitter Cam Hall.

Keeping Red Wing’s offense neutralized was Hampton starting pitcher Lucas Anderson, who struck out 17 while allowing six hits and three walks in a complete-game victory.

Aaron Johnson got the start for the Aces, striking out nine and allowing just two hits in seven innings. Jordan Warren was charged with the loss after 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Adam Thygesen led Red Wing’s offense with two hits, including a double, while Jimmy Bohmbach, Jenson, Alex Quiding and Josh Thygesen each had one hit in the loss.

The Aces (0-2, 0-1 CCVL) are scheduled to play their next four games at home, starting with the Ellsworth Hubbers on Tuesday. The Minneapolis Angels come to the Red Wing Athletic Field on Friday, followed by visits from Elko on Sunday and Lake City on May 20.
