Amateur Baseball: Red Wing holds on in Elko

Red Wing clutched to a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday on the road against Elko.

The Express clobbered a double into right field and sent the tying run home on the play but the Aces’ made the relay to cut down the runner for the second out and got a strikeout to preserve a 6-5 victory.

Aaron Johnson allowed two runs on six hits and six walks in seven innings to pick up the victory for Red Wing. He struck out four.

Jimmy Bohmbach paced the Aces on offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Mike Stegora was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, Kyle Blahnik was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Steve Boldt finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Goering went 1-for-4 with two RBI and Zach Laffey was 2-for-4 with a double.

Jason Grimm finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead Elko.

Red Wing took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and extended the lead to 6-0 after three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fourth. The Express finally responded with two runs in the sixth inning and added two more runs in the eighth inning.

The Aces host Kewaskum (Wis) Thursday at the Red Wing Athletic Field.
