Girls Hockey: Wingers cruise in Big Nine opener

With three straight Big Nine Conference championships under their belt, the Red Wing girls' hockey team were dominant in its conference opener after shutting out Rochester Mayo 7-0 Saturday in Rochester.

Starting at the 6-minute, 41-second mark of the first period, Taylor Heise scored the first of four goals with a power-play goal. Emily Hart, who picked up an assist on Heise's first goal, also chipped in a goal in the first period, followed by a Nicole Oberding power-play goal off an assist from Solveig Roth.

The second period proved just as fruitful for the Wingers (5-0), with back-to-back goals, including a power-play goal, from Heise. Hart punched in her second goal of the night to give Red Wing a 6-0 advantage.

Then at 5:30 of the third period, Heise put in her final goal, giving her a state-high 14 in five games. In net, Tyler McGrath got her second shutout of the season, making 20 saves.

The Wingers finished the night 4-for-5 on the power play and outshot the Spartans 32-20. Heise (4g, 1a) and Hart (2g, 3a) each had five points while Oberding (1g, 3a) tallied four points.

Fourth-ranked (Class A) Red Wing has this week off before the team returns to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 28 against Dodge County.
