Football: Winona whips Red Wing
Class 4A's top-ranked team wasted little time in putting Red Wing in a big hole as Winona scored 29 points in the first quarter on the way to a 56-8 victory on Friday night.
Terrell Hall had two punt returns for touchdowns (67 and 84 yards), and a 50-yard touchdown run before the first 12 minutes expired. Winhawk quarterback Riley Bosteter had a 20-yard rushing touchdown, also in the first quarter, with Winona's final points of the opening frame coming on a safety.
Bosteter also scored on a 1-yard run in the second to put the Winhawks up 36-0. Trevor Pomeroy and Dakota Matthees also reached the end zone for Winona, who pulled most of its starters up 50-0 in the second quarter.
Seth Yeatman was in at quarterback for the Wingers, and finished 6 of 12 for 55 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown to Sam Kelly after Matthees's touchdown. Tre Moore led Red Wing with two receptions for 37 yards, while Kevin Hall's two carries went for a team-high 39 yards. In total, the Wingers had 26 carries for 63 yards, and Winona finished with 34 carries for 258 yards.
Red Wing (0-7) will try for win No. 1 against eighth-ranked (Class 5A) Mankato West on Wednesday. The Scarlets come to town on the heels of a 62-6 win over Faribault on Friday.
