Area Volleyball Briefs: Bombers knock out JM in five
Hosting Rochester John Marshall on Thursday for a non-conference game, Cannon Falls fought off the visiting Rockets for a 3-2 victory, 23-25, 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11.
“We came out with much enthusiasm in front of our home crowd,” said Bombers head coach Melissa Huseth. “Hitters were connecting well with their setters and our defense was unstoppable. It was a great five-set thriller for an opening match at home. I loved that the girls battled hard throughout the match.”
Tatum Pickar anchored Cannon Falls’ defense with 44 digs while Riley Meyers and Kara Loeschke had 18 and 17 digs, respectively. Offensively, Shayla Hustad had a team-high 11 kills, followed by 10 for Loeschke and nine from Molly Bowen. Loeschke also finished with 27 set assists, with Rachel Huseth chipping in with 17.
The Bombers (1-1) will host Red Wing on Tuesday.
Kenyon-Wanamingo 3, WEM 0
Opening the season with four straight games on the road, Kenyon-Wanamingo is 2-0 on the road trip after beating Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in three sets, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22.
Ally Peterson provided a team-best 17 kills and 12 digs, followed by eight kills and five blocks from Megan Mattson. Maddie McCauley and Madi Luebke shared setter duties with 18 and 16 set assists, respectively. Sydney Way finished with 10 digs, and Corynne Dahl tallied five blocks for the Knights.
On Thursday, Sept. 7, K-W will travel to Cannon Falls for its Hiawatha Valley League opener.
Spring Grove 3, Randolph 0
Randolph suffered its first loss of the season Thursday, getting swept at Southeast Conference foe Spring Grove, 25-17, 25-10, 26-24.
Megan Erickson had a Rocket-best six kills while Kenna Foss had eight set assists and Alyssa Whitson tallied three blocks.
On Tuesday, Randolph (2-1, 2-1 SEC) begins a three-game homestand against Grand Meadow.
