Needing 10 innings to decide a victor, the Hadley Buttermakers were able to slip by the Cannon Falls Bears with a 3-2 victory in the opening round of the Class C state tournament Sunday in Norwood Young America.
Hadley's Max Zwart belted a single to right field, which allowed base runner Nick Bruning a chance to score the game-winning run. Bruning beat the throw home, giving the Buttermakers the decisive edge.
Led by Bruning's 3-for-5 performance, Hadley got 13 hits on the Bears. Derek Lieser was 2-for-5 and Kellan Johnson were both 2-for-5 with a run scored while Chris Halbur finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lucas Henning, a draftee from the Worthington Cubs, go the win after allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts in five innings of relief.
For the Bears, Alex Tauer was 2-for-4 at the plate while Luke Winchell finished 2-for-5. Garrett Beach and Austin Jacobs both scored runs while Rich Burr and Zeke Williams both drove in a run at the bottom of Cannon Falls' order. On the mound, Keith Meyers threw all 10 innings for the Bears, striking out eight with one walk allowed in the loss.
Cannon Falls finished the 2017 season with a 15-21 record.
