Boys Swimming: Wingers fifth at section True Team, just miss state spot
The Red Wing boys' swimming and diving team was one spot short of going to state True Team for the second straight year after the Section 1A True Team meet took place Friday and Saturday at Austin.
The Wingers were fifth in the section meet with a score of 1,071, bested by Northfield (1,559), Winona (1,320), Mankato West (1,276) and Simley (1,260.5).
After the meet, the Wingers' results were put into the paper wild-card meet. The Wingers' score of 3,471 was not enough for the final state wild card spot, which went to Montevideo after the Thunderhawks got 3,662 points.
William Meacham had two of the top finishes for Red Wing, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 52.36 seconds, along with a second-place mark in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.32. Ben Schaffer also had a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.66 as well as a seventh-place showing in the 50 freestyle in 23.32.
Other top 10 finishes for Red Wing came from Ian Johnson in the 100 backstroke (sixth, 1:01.93) and Jayden Jech in both the 200 freestyle (seventh, 1:57.12) and 100 freestyle (52.68). Patrick Beech placed 12th in the 500 freestyle in 5:27.27, and Abe De Jong was 13th in diving with 228.65 points.
The Wingers' top relay was the 200 medley, as Johnson, Schaffer, Meacham and Jech took third in 1:44.19. The 200 freestyle relay of Jech, Jonas Hart, Wyatt Hofius and Schaffer was sixth in 1:37.79, and the 400 freestyle relay of Hart, Meacham, Hofius and Konner Brickey placed ninth in 3:40.47.
“We had a great meet on Saturday. The boys really stepped up to the challenge of trying to get to True Team state,” said Red Wing head coach Kevin O'Brien. “Unfortunately we missed it by one team.”
On Tuesday, the Wingers are slated to travel to Inver Grove Heights for a dual against Simley.
